In this episode, J. Corey Feist reflects and pays tribute to his sister-in-law, Dr. Lorna Breen. Dr. Breen, a hard-working, passionate individual that excelled in life, her position as a practicing ER physician, and Director at New York-Presbyterian Allen Hospital. Dr. Lorna Breen was an extraordinarily successful and knowledgeable physician, and yet, when the pandemic hit, she could not escape its impact. Surviving the virus itself, the demands of being a frontline worker in the pandemic proved overwhelming for Dr. Breen. When she ended her life by suicide, her tragic story rocked headlines around the world and cast a spotlight on the silent pandemic faced by frontline healthcare professionals around the globe.
Since the loss of Dr. Breen, her Sister, Jennifer, and Corey have taken a position and created the Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes’ Foundation honoring her life; the foundation wishes to reduce burnout and improve healthcare professionals’ well-being. The foundation has already substantially moved the needle, helping to pass the Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act, comprehensive, bipartisan legislation to reduce and prevent suicide, burnout, and mental and behavioral health conditions among health care professionals alongside leaders like Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA).
Nonetheless, a devastating story; Dr. Breen’s selflessness and virtues live on through the words of her very own family.
